Southeast District

The neighborhoods of the Southeast District offer some of the most affordable housing in all of San Francisco. The residents are predominantly working-class, lower-income to middle-income folks, with a sense of pride in their homes and their community. Because it's located in the southern part of the city, this district is generally warmer than most others, but it's still susceptible to fog. The neighborhoods in the Southeast District include:

Bayview/Hunter's Point
Part residential and part industrial, the Bayview/Hunter's Point neighborhood is a mix of retail complexes and well-kept, still-affordable single-family homes. The neighborhood is considered the heart of San Francisco's African-American community, but there is a diverse ethnic population here. There are more home owners in this neighborhood than in other parts of the city, and there is a strong, close-knit community base and a number of family-owned businesses.

The neighborhood boundaries are roughly Islais Creek Channel, Middle Point Road, the South Basin, and Highway 280. This working-class neighborhood is near the former Navy Yard, which is where you can find loft spaces in the refurbished warehouses. The historic San Francisco Opera House is located in the area, as is Candlestick Park (recently renamed 3COM Park), home to San Francisco's 49ers and Giants.

Crocker Amazon
Once part of railroad magnate Charles Crocker's massive estate, the solidly middle-class Crocker Amazon neighborhood is a quiet haven with well-tended lawns. The residents are an ethnically diverse mix of young professionals and blue-collar workers.

Bounded by Amazon Avenue, McLaren Park, Crocker Avenue, and Mission Street, Crocker Amazon is a predominately residential neighborhood. The housing here—single-family homes and apartment buildings—is still affordable, although as the neighborhood becomes more revitalized, you can expect rents to increase. Shopping can be found along Mission Street.

Excelsior
A quiet residential area, the Excelsior has a mix of single-family homes (built mainly in the 1950s), apartments, duplexes, and public housing. The Excelsior is an economically and ethnically diverse neighborhood that caters primarily to young couples and families.

The neighborhood is bounded by Highway 280 to the north and west, McLaren Park to the east, and the city's boundary line to the south. Excelsior Playground, in the center of the neighborhood, has tennis courts and a recreational center. Mission Street, which runs through the Excelsior, is the best place for shopping. It offers produce and seafood markets, butcher shops, bakeries, and taquerias.

Portola
Named for Don Gaspar de Portola, leader of the expedition that discovered San Francisco Bay, the Portola is a working-class neighborhood. In the 1950s the residents were primarily Italian immigrants, but the neighborhood now is ethnically diverse with a high concentration of Chinese immigrants. Housing here is mainly single-family homes and a few rental apartments.

The neighborhood is bounded by Silver Avenue, Route 101, Mansell Avenue, and Madison Avenue. Shopping is convenient in the neighborhood Portola Shopping Center, with its specialty grocery store, service station, and banks. Also in the area is scenic McLaren Park. At 348 acres, it's one of one of the largest parks in San Francisco, and features athletic fields and playgrounds, tennis courts, a nine-hole golf course, and seven miles of hiking trails.
