University of Washington Medical Center ranked 11th among the nation's 1,958 medical centers considered in U.S. News & World Report's 2002 annual guide to "America's Best Hospitals." Among specialty rankings, it ranked third for rehabilitation and among the Top 16 hospitals for care in hormone disorders; orthopedics; ear, nose and throat; geriatrics; respiratory disorders; cancer; and kidney disease. Since 1993, UWMC has consistently ranked among the guide's top hospitals.

Located on the University of Washington campus, the 450-bed comprehensive care facility provides primary-care services for Greater Seattle residents. It also is a regional referral and treatment center for specialized medical care, with more than 80 outpatient clinics and multidisciplinary specialty centers. As well, it is one of two major teaching hospitals for the University of Washington School of Medicine.

UWMC has about 400 faculty physicians and 2,400 staff. The American Nurses Credentialing Center certified it in 2002 as Washington State's only "Magnet Hospital" for excellence in nursing care.
