University Medical Center 1501 North Campbell Avenue Arizona’s only academic medical center, University Medical Center (UMC), was established in 1971. The private not-for-profit hospital is licensed for 365 beds and located on the grounds of the Arizona Health Sciences Center. UMC is a Level I trauma unit and the primary teaching hospital for the University of Arizona’s colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy, and Nursing. For 2002, U.S. News and World Report ranked UMC among the nation’s Top 40 hospitals for cardiology, heart surgery, oncology, rheumatology, neurology, and neurosurgery. Medical firsts at the hospital have included design of the world’s first artificial wrist (1976), Arizona’s first heart transplant (1979), and first successful use of stereotactic radiosurgery to destroy a spinal tumor (1993).
